33 chapter 3 passage descriptive writing

Why does Fitzgerald spend so much time describing these details? What is the effect of this, and how can we relate what he is doing here to the novel’s title?

The reason behind Fitzgerald’s descriptive writing in the first passage of chapter 3, is that it helps the reader built the setting of this Gatsby’s house, and Gatsby’s personality/character. He describes it with sophisticated, engaging extended metaphors, figurative imagery, and poetic language to create the setting Gatsby’s house has. The title of this novel The Great Gatsby relates to this passage, since “The Great” explains his extroverted household, and his popularity and status amongst these parties.
