The author of the story is Tom Briggs. He is a dad of 3 children, and he writes short stories. He is a UK multi-award-winning dad blog writer. He’s been writing Diary of the Dad since 2010 and it’s gone from a small hobby to his full-time job.
The story I’m talking about is called “Kids are weird”. It was published on October 20th, 2019. I would say this story is a personal essay because he did the same thing I have done before. He gave a thesis statement, he gave some examples and evidence, and lastly, a conclusion. Also, his work is always very organised and nicely in order. It could also be considered a blog but I think a personal essay describes this story and the way he wrote it more. It’s also a personal essay because he doesn’t describe his feelings as much as someone would in a blog. He describes what is happening and why his children are weird. Like when his youngest child wanted Weetabix. Weetabix is something you eat in breakfast with milk, or else it would be very dry and not very good to eat. But the kid didn’t want any milk and Tom was pretty weirded out by it. Because he could see that she (the kid) didn’t like it dry that much, but that she wanted to prove a point or something. He didn’t really describe how he felt while this story because he didn’t say he was weirded out, but by the way he reacted to the child eating it without milk showed that he was weirded out by it.
He made his own online platform called https://www.diaryofthedad.co.uk/. He gives information about himself and he writes a lot of blogs about his family, what he’s thinking and his experiences. His work has gotten pretty popular and even won a couple of awards.
It’s good how try to categorise the piece of writing here, and it’s good to do that in the beginning. Be careful: a personal essay and an analysis essay are not necessarily structured in the same way. Personal essays can have a far more loose structure.
